KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Iowa State volleyball team continued its winning ways as it defeated UMKC in three games Wednesday night at UMKC's Swinney Recreation Center. The Cyclones captured games by winning 30-23, 30-22 and 30-28. ISU is now 4-0 on the season, while UMKC falls to 0-3.
The Cyclones continued to shine offensively in the fourth match of the season, racking up 41 kills in 127 attempts. Junior middle blocker Katie Kruenegel, who was named the tournament MVP of the Auburn Challenge last weekend, led ISU's offensive attack. She pounded a team-high 12 kills on 30 attempts and added three digs and three block assists. Junior Ashlie McWee was right behind her with nine kills and a team-high seven block assists.
"I thought our middles did a great job tonight," associate head coach Amy Farber Knowles said. "They were a large reason for our efficiency in the front row. I thought our passing was great which allowed us to get the ball where we needed it."
Sophomore Nicole Lorenzen had a solid match for ISU, smashing six kills to go along with 11 digs. Sophomore Katie Churm was a consistent force on defense, racking up 10 digs and had a team-high two service aces.
"I thought Katie (Churm) was very consistent tonight," said Knowles. "She really helped control the ball for us and really helped us control the game."
Senior Brittany Dalager led the way defensively for ISU with 12 digs. She also had two kills. Senior Christine Smeele also had a solid game defensively with eight digs.
"Brittany and Christine were staples for us and were great leaders for us tonight," Knowles said. "Brittany is our leader and really showed it tonight and Christine came in and had a great passing game, especially after struggling a little bit against Auburn."
ISU's freshmen continued to play well with Meghan Ferrie coming in for game three and contributing three kills, one dig and three blocks. Erin Boeve played in two games and had four kills.
"Overall, it wasn't a great game for us, but it was a win, which is great," said Knowles. "We seemed to come out a little flat, but we did some great things and I think that this serves as motivation for the tournament this weekend."
Iowa State will travel to San Antonio, Texas, on Sept. 10-11 to take part in the 2004 Texas-San Antonio Challenge. The Cyclones will play Rice and Prairie View A&M on Friday and will take on host Texas-San Antonio on Saturday night.
