AMES, Iowa - Iowa State (14-14, 7-10 Big 12) overcame a sluggish start to sweep Oklahoma (6-20, 1-16 Big 12) in Hilton Coliseum Wednesday night (30-26, 30-23, 30-23), snapping a six-match losing streak in the process.
"It's nice to get back on track," said Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson. "We played good defense tonight."
Erin Boeve (11 kills) and Jessica Klein (10 kills) led the Iowa State offensive attack. Boeve registered six block assists and a career-high four service aces as her onslaught on the ISU record book continued. Laura Cady (12), Nicole Lorenzen (12) and Katie Churm (11) all tallied double-digit digs. Amanda Craig dished out 31 assists for the victorious Cyclones.
"We need to continue our defensive play over our next few matches." Johnson said. "I think we still have to improve offensively and on our blocking."
Iowa State managed only a .192 hitting percentage for the match, but was helped by its defense holding Oklahoma to a paltry .115 effort.
Oklahoma scored the first four points of the night, and led 11-4 before the Cyclones rallied to a 12-12 tie. The teams played within one point until Oklahoma opened a 24-22 advantage. At that point, the Iowa State defense kicked in. Erin Boeve and Nicole Lorenzen combined for blocks on consecutive points, then Boeve and Meghan Ferrie teamed up to reject a Sooner attack, turning the tide toward the Cyclones. Ferrie added two more kills as ISU claimed a 30-26 game one victory.
With game two tied at 5-5, ISU went on a 9-3 run, forcing an Oklahoma timeout. The Cyclones controlled the rest of the second stanza, extending their lead to eight points before taking the 30-23 win. Iowa State took advantage of a .240 to .064 hitting margin to put the Sooners down two games to none.
A hard-fought third game followed. Neither team was able to gain a discernable advantage until a kill by Katie Jessen put Iowa State ahead 21-17. The Cyclones would run their lead to 26-18 before finishing off Oklahoma, 30-23. Fittingly, the last point of the match was recorded on a block by Boeve and Ferrie.
In game three, 21 of Iowa State's 30 points were created on the offensive end of the floor, in addition to two blocks. Jessen recorded six kills in the deciding game, followed by Boeve's five.
Iowa State travels to Texas Tech Saturday night to take on the Red Raiders. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
