AMES, Iowa - Iowa State dropped its second five-game match in a row on Wednesday night, falling to Kansas State, 3-2 (30-26, 27-30, 30-26, 24-30, 12-15), despite career nights from Erin Boeve and Katie Churm.
With the loss, ISU falls to 13-12 overall and 6-8 in Big 12 action while Kansas State improves to 16-7 overall and 7-6 in conference play.
"I think this match shows that we have come a long way as a team," said ISU head coach Christy Johnson. "Just to be in position to win a match against the No. 24 team in the nation is nice and a loss isn't the end of the world. Now we need to learn how to take it to the next level and win these matches."
Boeve made the most of her chances, recording a career-high 28 kills on 48 attempts for a .438 hitting percentage. Churm was equally impressive defensively, posting a career-best 33 digs in the match.
The Cyclones jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match, picking up the first game win, 30-26, behind a .452 hitting percentage. Boeve led the way with eight kills while Churm had nine first game digs.
K-State would rally back and take game two 30-27. The Wildcats used a 6-1 run on the serve of Rita Lilliom to go ahead 9-4. The visitors cruised to the game two victory, out-hitting ISU .184 to .109 and getting seven kills from junior outside hitter Sandy Werner.
ISU regained the edge with a 30-26 game three win after out-blocking K-State 7-3 in the game. Boeve was strong at the net, recording a solo block and four block assists in putting ISU on top 2-1.
The Wildcats evened up the match with a 30-24 win in the fourth game. With ISU leading 17-12 and looking for its second win over a ranked opponent this season, K-State used another 6-1 run to knot it up at 18-18. The Wildcats scrapped their way to the win as Agata Rezende put it away on a kill from Stacey Spiegelberg.
ISU held a 10-9 lead in the deciding fifth game after an attack error by the Wildcats. A K-State timeout propelled the Wildcats to three consecutive points and the Cyclones were unable to regain the lead despite tying it up at 12-12. Kills by Lilliom and Werner gave K-State an insurmountable lead and an attack error by ISU allowed the Wildcats to pick up the important Big 12 win.
Amanda Craig came up two kills short of a triple-double, posting eight kills, 55 assists and 14 digs in the loss. Jessica Klein topped her career-high with 16 kills and Katie Jessen had 11 kills and 10 digs in the match.
In addition to her career-high kills, Boeve also posted a career-best six digs to go along with two solo blocks and nine block assists.
Werner and Rezende led the Wildcats with 22 and 21 kills, respectively.
ISU will face No. 1 Nebraska on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.
