TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Iowa State freshman Kiel Uhl finished 67th in a field of 253 competitors at the NCAA Cross Country Championship on Monday. The Prole native finished the 10K at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in a time of 30:40.6. Wisconsin's Simon Bairu won the title with a time of 29:15.9. Wisconsin had a strong hold on the competition, finishing first as a team with 37 points, followed by Arkansas (105) and Notre Dame (178).
"Kiel was pretty disappointed until he looked back to reflect on the whole year, not just this race itself," said ISU men's head coach Corey Ihmels. "The pace started out pretty fast, and he really struggled during the last 5K. This was a really high level race, and he stuck his nose in. There's no telling where he will go in the future."
"It was an experience," said true freshman Kiel Uhl about the meet. "I didn't think it would be that difficult. I tried to keep my composure, but I lost it pretty early. This gives me a new perspective on the competition and what I need to work on for the future. Looking back at the whole season, I have to be pretty happy. If I said I was disappointed, it would be pretty selfish of me."
Uhl, a former state distance champion at Des Moines-Roosevelt High School returns to a team that loses no runners to graduation. Dan Taylor of Fort Dodge, who redshirted the 2005 season, should also be a strong contributor to the ISU cross country team next year.
