AMES, Iowa - Iowa State used 10 kills from Erin Boeve to defeat Kansas, 3-0 (30-27, 30-14, 30-27), and clinch their first winning season in 10 years on senior day at Hilton Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
Iowa State honored its four seniors in a pre-match ceremony and improved to 16-15 overall and 9-11 in Big 12 play. Kansas falls to 15-14 overall and 7-13 in conference action.
"I thought it was a sloppy match but much of that can be attributed to nerves," said ISU head coach Christy Johnson. "Everyone was out of sync and a lot of that had to do with Kansas playing without its setter. I am very happy to get this win."
Katie Churm had 12 digs to become the 10th player in Iowa State history to go over 1,000 digs in a career. Churm has 1,004 and ranks ninth all-time at the school.
Katie Jessen had nine kills for ISU in the win while Amanda Craig recorded 36 assists. Laura Cady also reached double-figures for the Cyclones with 10 digs to go along with a career-high four service aces. The Cyclones had eight aces in the match.
The Jayhawks were paced by nine kills from Paula Caten, who also had a team-high nine digs in the loss.
The Cyclones got off to a slow start in game one, falling behind Kansas 14-9 before going on a 10-0 run. Katie Churm served the Cyclones to nine straight points in the run, which included two service aces by the junior libero.
ISU would win the first game 30-27 with Meghan Ferrie leading the way with three first game kills.
The Cyclones had a better start in the second game, going ahead 11-7 before they went on a 7-0 run, again behind the serve of Churm. Iowa State would cruise to a 30-14 win and go ahead 2-0 in the match.
Iowa State fell behind 12-9 in game three but rallied back to go ahead 13-12. The teams battled back-and-forth before before a kill from Katie Kruenegel knotted the game up at 24. The Cyclones scored the next three points and hung on for a 30-27 win.
Iowa State will wait and see if they are included in the NCAA tournament. The field of 64 will be announced Sunday on ESPNews at 1:30 p.m.
"It is very exciting to even think that making the tournament is a possibility," said Johnson.
