DALLAS - Curtis Stinson, Iowa State's all-American guard candidate, has been named Big 12 Player of the Week as announced by the Big 12 league office today. Stinson, who ranks fourth in the Big 12 in scoring (17.7), led the Cyclones to consecutive league wins for the week and extended Iowa State's conference winning streak to seven games, the third-longest league win stretch in school history.
Stinson had one of his best all-around games against Kansas State in Ames on Tuesday, Feb. 15. The sophomore scored a team-high 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting while collecting a game-high nine rebounds. Stinson added six assists and three steals in his 37 minutes of action, leading ISU to its sixth-straight Big 12 win with a 57-42 victory over the Wildcats.
Stinson's performance at No. 2 Kansas on Saturday, Feb. 19, was one for the ages. The Bronx native poured in 29 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Cyclones upset the Jayhawks in Allen Fieldhouse in overtime, 63-61. In one of the most memorable offensive performances in recent ISU history, Stinson scored all seven of his team's points in the overtime period, including one of the most clutch shots in his young career, a game-winning floater from inside the lane with :05.3 seconds remaining.
Stinson, who leads the Big 12 in steals, earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors for the second time this season. His previous award came after a 30-point outing in a win over Virginia in December. Stinson was the Big 12's Rookie of the Year a season ago and was named Big 12 Rookie of the Week three times in 2003-04.
