Dan McCarney to be Inducted into Iowa City High Hall of Fame

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State head football coach Dan McCarney is one of seven inductees in this year's Iowa City High School Hall of Fame. He joins ISU head tennis coach Michele Conlon, a 2003 inductee, in the prestigious group of distinguished alumni.

"I am extremely honored and humbled to be inducted into the City High Hall of Fame," McCarney said. "I had a fantastic experience during my career as a student-athlete at City High, and the teachers, coaches and administrators had a real impact on my life. I have always been proud of my Iowa roots and the memories I will always cherish from my days at City High."

McCarney lettered in football, wrestling and track for City High, leading the Little Hawks to the 1971 conference football championship his senior season while earning all-state honors. He lettered three seasons the University of Iowa, captaining the 1974 squad, before free-agent stints with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos. After spending 13 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa, McCarney served as the defensive coordinator for five seasons at Wisconsin.

The Iowa City native took over the head coaching reins at Iowa State in 1995, leading the Cyclones to four bowl games in the last five years and the program's first conference championship since 1912. McCarney, who earned 2004 Big 12 Coach of the Year accolades, is the son of P.J. and the late June McCarney of Iowa City.

Other Iowa City High Hall of Fame inductees include Art Andrews (1955), James Andrews (1952), Robert Duffy (1940), Helen Finken (teacher), Fremont Issacs (1927) and Timothy Koch (1968). The induction banquet will be held on Thursday, Oct. 13, while the inductees will be honored at Friday night's football game.
