LARAMIE, Wyo. - Three Cyclone newcomers led the Iowa State men's cross country team to a third place finish at the Wyoming Invitational on Friday. Colorado State and Air Force placed first and second, respectively. Kiel Uhl, a freshman from Prole, Iowa, was the first Iowa Stater across the line, finishing fourth of 66 with a time of 22:18.83. Coming in as the second Cyclone to complete the race was newcomer Jory Zunich. Zunich clocked a time of 23:05.16 to finish 16th overall. Gardiner, Mont. native John Ricardi was third in line for the Iowa State team, finishing with a time of 23:15.91 and placing 22nd. David Rotich was going strong in the first three miles of the course, keeping within the top five, but did not finish due to illness.
Sophomore Ricky Reusser and freshman Richard Newton were next in line for the Cylones, with times of 23:32.87 and 23:43.84, respectively. Jon Reis (24.40.96) and Kyle Rasmussen (25:00.91), both juniors, also competed for ISU.
"I thought our guys did a very solid job," said men's head cross country coach Corey Ihmels. "We had a few guys feeling under the weather, but I feel good about our performance. Kiel Uhl did a tremendous job. This was his first race as a collegiate athlete, and he did great. Our top three guys were all freshman; I think this meet is a good barometer of where we're at." "It was pretty fun and exciting," said the top Cyclone performer Kiel Uhl. "I ran pretty conservatively because I didn't know what to expect. At the college level, the guys were pretty big. I thought I had a good race, but it was not my best performance. There's a lot more to come; I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season. I think today is a good indication of what's to come."
The Cyclone men and women's cross country teams will run at home next Friday at the ISU Open, tentatively scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start. Complete results from the Wyoming Invitational can be found at www.wyomingathletics.collegesports.com.
