AMES, Iowa (AP) - Kenton Paulino scored a career-high 20 points and Daniel Gibson added 19 to lead No. 8 Texas past Iowa State 78-58 on Monday night, extending the Longhorns' winning streak to five games.
Texas (13-2, 2-0 Big 12) has been on a roll since suffering back-to-back losses to No. 1 Duke and Tennessee. The Longhorns have won their last five games by double digits - including a 69-58 victory at No. 5 Memphis - and have moved back into the Top 10 for the first time since early December.
The Longhorns broke the game open with a 14-4 run early in the second half. Paulino hit a 3-pointer to put Texas up by nine, and LaMarcus Aldridge converted a 3-point play to give the Longhorns a 48-36 lead with 15:00 left. Paulino finished with six 3 pointers.
Iowa State (11-4, 1-1) briefly got within 49-40, but Gibson made consecutive 3-pointers to push the Longhorns' lead to 68-49 with 5:50 left.
Texas kept the Cyclones at bay in the second half by pounding them on the boards, outrebounding Iowa State 23-8.
Paulino took advantage of constant open looks and broke his career high for points for the second straight game. He made five 3-pointers in the first half, and keyed a 17-6 run that put the Longhorns ahead to stay late in the first half.
Paulino tied the game at 20 with a 3-pointer, then capped the spurt with back-to-back threes late in the first half to give Texas a 34-26 lead.
The Longhorns held Curtis Stinson, Iowa State's leading scorer, to seven points.
Rahshon Clark led the Cyclones with 18 points. Will Blalock added 17 and brought the crowd to its feet midway through the first half by wrapping the ball behind his back with his left hand, bouncing it in front of his body and banking it in a layup.
Texas is now 2-5 all-time at Hilton Coliseum.
