AMES, Iowa--The sound of basketballs pounding the hardwood could be heard when you entered Hilton Coliseum Friday night. It could mean only one thing. Basketball season is here. The Greg McDermott era officially began tonight when the Cyclones performed their first practice of the 2006-07 season.
Fundamental drill stations were setup and players were intently listening to McDermott implement his successful system, one that led Northern Iowa to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
“The guys have done everything we have asked them to do in the off-season,” McDermott said. “Now it is time to work together and get better as a team.”
With only four scholarship players returning, some preseason publications have the Cyclones near the bottom of the Big 12. Where a magazine predicts ISU to finish is something McDermott and his Cyclones can't control. What they can control is the desire and effort to improve every day.
“We are not concerned about preseason publications,” McDermott said. “We will go out every game and play as hard as we can and see who comes out on top. As long as we execute our game-plan, we will have chances to win games.”
Junior Rahshon Clark is ISU's top returning scorer at 13.1 ppg. A native of Queens, N.Y., Clark was named to the Big 12's all-underrated team a year ago and will be counted upon to provide valuable leadership to the young and experienced Cyclones.
“I thought we had a great first practice,” Clark said. “We worked on fundamentals, defensive principles and offensive sets. We, as a team, can't be worried about where people think we are going to finish. We just need to go out and play hard, and good things will come.”
The Cyclones have three weeks before their first tune-up of the season, playing host to EA Sports in an exhibition game on Nov. 3. ISU's first regular-season game is Nov. 10 against UC-Riverside. Both games are in Hilton Coliseum.
