AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State had five players with double-figure kills and digs but fell, 3-2 (30-24, 30-32, 30-27, 22-30, 15-17), to Texas Tech on Saturday night in Lubbock, Texas.
Iowa State drops to 12-7 overall and 4-5 in Big 12 play while Texas Tech improves to 10-8 and 3-6 in conference action.
Erin Boeve paced Iowa State with 20 kills while Katie Jessen had 17 in the match. Lauren Cummings ripped 16 kills and Jessica Klein and Nicole Lorenzen added 15 each in the loss.
Defensively, Lorenzen had 18 digs and Katie Churm added 17. Also reaching double-figures for the Cyclones was Kaylee Manns (15 digs), Jessen (11 digs) and Laura Cady (10 digs). Manns also added a career-high 78 assists, the second best total in school history, as the Cyclones out hit the Red Raiders, .255 to .231.
Tied at 2-2, Iowa State went ahead 4-2 in game five behind kills from Cummings and Lorenzen. The Red Raiders came back and tied it at 7-7 before another Cummings' kill put ISU up 8-7. ISU would push its lead to 11-8 on a Boeve kill before the Red Raiders scored four of the next five points to even it up at 12-12. The Cyclones scored the next two points but Texas Tech fought off two match points to tie it at 14-14. Lorenzen ripped a kill to give Iowa State another match point but Amy Charlebois responded with one of her 19 kills to again tie it. The Red Raiders got a kill from Brittany Hughes and a block from Charlebois and Kiley Lyons to end the Cyclones' three-match Big 12 road winning streak.
The Cyclones took game one 30-24 behind six kills on six attempts from Cummings. ISU hit .289 and used a stifling defense to hold the Red Raiders to a .162 hitting percentage in the game.
The Cyclones jumped out to a 4-0 lead but were unable to hold off the Red Raiders in game two. Iowa State led 21-18 after a Klein kill but Texas Tech rattled off three straight to tie it at 21-21. The Cyclones trailed 27-26 but back-to-back kills by Klein and Lorenzen put ISU back in the lead. With the match tied at 30-30, Philister Sang drilled a kill and Jenn Harrell served up one of the eight Red Raider aces in the match to give Texas Tech the 32-30 win.
The Cyclones bounced back to win the third game, 30-27. Iowa State again took a 4-0 lead but the Red Raiders again came back to lead by as much as three at 20-17. The Cyclones then ran off seven straight to go ahead 24-20 en route to the 30-27 win.
Texas Tech hit .311 and forced a fifth game with a convincing 30-22 win. The home team took a 10-2 lead out of the gate but ISU made it interesting, closing the gap to one at 19-18 after a kill from Boeve. Texas Tech had the answer, scoring 11 of the final 15 points to even the match at 2-2.
The Cyclones out dug the Red Raiders, 80-63, but were out blocked, 14-11, for just the fourth time all year.
Sang led Texas Tech with 24 kills and Harrell had 17 digs.
Iowa State will be back in action Wednesday night when it faces Texas A&M (9-8, 2-7 Big 12) at 6:30 p.m.
