LAWRENCE, Kan.—The Iowa State men's cross country team made a strong finish in the Big 12 Conference with a fifth-place team finish at the 2006 Big 12 Cross Country Championships held at Rim Rock farm in Lawrence, Kan., Friday.
“I'm a little disappointed in our final place,” men's head coach Corey Ihmels said. “We wanted to crack into the top four, but we ended up fifth. The conference is really good and not being in those top four teams doesn't mean we're not a good team.”
Leading off for the Cyclones was sophomore Kiel Uhl. The Prole, Iowa native finished in eighth place on the 8K course, with teammate Guor Majak coming in second for the Cyclones in 14th place. The race started out in a tight pack, but the leaders pulled away midway through the race.
“Kiel did a solid job for us,” Ihmels said. “He just got out there and competed hard. He's one of the top guys in the conference and he showed that today. All in all I thought the guys competed really hard. They laid it out there and tried to run as a top four team and just came up one place short. It's something to build off of for the next two weeks for regionals and then next year for the Big 12 championships then.”
Iowa State's final team score was 118 points with Colorado winning its 11th consecutive Big 12 cross country team championship with 36 points. The ISU men will have a two-week break until the Midwest regional meet on Nov. 11 in Minneapolis, Minn. Check out www.cyclones.com for more information.
