AMES, Iowa -- Four-time first-team academic all-Big 12 Conference honoree Seth Zehr of Fort Dodge leads 12 Iowa State football players honored with academic all-league recognition Wednesday by the league office. Zehr, who made 43 career starts in the offensive line, is a graduate student in the MBA program at ISU. Cyclone football players have earned first-team all-conference academic honors 73 times in the last nine years. Of 23 Iowa State senior football players, 21 are slated to graduate by December. The two other student-athletes, who did not redshirt, will be back for their last year of academic studies next year.
Three-time honoree Shawn Moorehead, a defensive end from Mason City majoring in mechanical engineering, who finished his career as the Cyclones' all-time leader in sacks, also made the first team. He was joined on the first-team by junior safety Caleb Berg of York Neb., who is a health and human performance major, junior defensive lineman and biology major Bryce Braaksma of Sheldon, sophomore linebacker and finance and accounting major Adam Carper of Clarinda and fullback and elementary education major Steve Ebner of Sioux City.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the football academic all-league team consisted of 92 first-team members combined with 54 on the second team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
Six Cyclones earned second-team all-Big 12 honors. Nick Harklau, a redshirt freshman from Humboldt majoring in marketing; Justin Harris, a senior defensive back from Davenport majoring in management; John Machado, a senior defensive lineman and liberal studies major from Miami, Fla.; David Rahe, a senior defensive back from Dyersville majoring in construction engineering; Walker Scott, a senior linebacker majoring in health and human performance from Salix and Scott Stephenson, a senior center from St. Paul, Minn. majoring in sociology and criminal justice.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. True freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
