DALLAS - Iowa State's Curtis Stinson and Will Blalock both earned all-Big 12 recognition, announced today by the Big 12 office and voted on by the league's head coaches. Stinson earned second-team honors for the second consecutive season and Blalock was a third-team pick.
Stinson, a junior from Bronx, N.Y., posted another fantastic season in his third year as a starter. Stinson's name was found among the leaders in the Big 12 and NCAA statistics, ranking in the top-three in the Big 12 in scoring (19.3 ppg, 3rd), assists (5.5, 3rd) and steals (2.4 spg, 2nd). He is currently the only player in the nation to rank in the top-50 in those three categories, ranking 35th, 26th and 19th nationally in scoring, assists and steals. Stinson has tallied 70 steals this season, the fifth-best effort in school history, to improve his career total to 197, which ranks fifth all-time and is 14 steals behind the school-record holder Jeff Hornacek with 211. Stinson, who was a first-team NABC all-district pick, needs three steals to become just the third player in Big 12 history to record 1,500 points, 400 rebounds, 400 assists and 200 steals in a career. Stinson was named Big 12 Player of the Week twice this season, earning his second POW honor after recording ISU's third triple-double in school history against Colorado with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
Blalock's ballhandling and improved scoring made ISU's one-two punch in the backcourt one of the best in the nation. The Boston, Mass., native is second in the Big 12 and 12th nationally in assists with a 6.1 apg clip. Blalock continues to assault the ISU assist record book as just a junior. His 177 season assists ranks seventh on the ISU single-season record chart and his 457 career dimes is the fifth-best total all-time in school history. The point guard is averaging 15.4 ppg and 2.2 spg, ranking 10th and fourth in the Big 12, respectively. Blalock was named MVP of the prestigious Rainbow Classic in December after averagiing 16.3 points and 7.3 assists in the three-game tournament.
