Evanston, Ill. - Two-time All-American Trent Paulson will lead Iowa State at the University Nationals in Evanston, Ill., April 28-30 in a quest to qualify for the World Team Trials. Paulson, who also placed in fourth in freestyle, was the 74 kg. Greco-Roman champion last year and will compete in freestyle along with his brother Travis, also a two-time All-American. Members from ISU's top-ranked recruiting class of 2005 will also be competing in freestyle. The top two placewinners in Greco-Roman and freestyle advance to the World Team Trials May 27-28 in Sioux City.
"With Greco, I'm really confident especially since I won a title last year and I hadn't really prepared for it for two years," Trent Paulson said. "I'll be with Travis competing in Greco and freestyle so I won't be alone. Vegas is a good warm-up but is a lot tougher than University Nationals. Cael's had practice structured for the postseason and everyone will be ready to go."
Iowa State is coming off a performance at the U.S. Nationals in Las Vegas where former 2004 ISU NCAA champion Zach Roberson toppled defending U.S. Nationals freestyle winner and World Team member Michael Lightner at 60 kg. Former three-time All-American and 2006 national champion Nate Gallick placed third at 60 kg to qualify for the World Team Trials. Nick Gallick earned a spot in the championship bracket after competing in the qualifying 60 kg. competition. Redshirt freshmen Mitch Mueller and Nick Fanthorpe placed third and seventh, respectively, at 66 kg. and 55 kg. at the FILA Junior Nationals. 2006 ISU recruit Jon Reader was a double-winner in Evanston last season, winning Greco-Roman (74 kg.) and freestyle (69 kg.) at the FILA Cadet Nationals. Reader, a three-time state champion from Davison, Mich., also captured freestyle and Greco-Roman titles at the Western Junior Regionals in Las Vegas and recently was the recipient of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Regional Award.
