AMES, Iowa - Iowa State freshman Kiel Uhl paced the U.S. team with a 36th-place finish among 92 runners at the IAAF World Junior Cross Country Championships Sunday, covering the 8,000-meter course in 25:31. The U.S. team finished ninth overall. Ndiwa Mangata Kimai of Kenya was the individual champion, leading his country to the team title by covering the course in 23:52. Kenya's four scoring runners finished 1-2-4-9 to take the championship with 16 points. Uhl's American teammates placed 41st, 49th and 52nd behind him for 178 points.
Uhl was even paced throughout the race, sitting at 40th at 1,000 meters (3:06), 46th at 2K (5:56), 38th at 3k (8:41), 36th at 4k (12:15), 36th at 5k (15:09), 36th at 6k (18:50) and 35th at 7k (21:46) before his final dash to the chute. Uhl, who prepped at Des Moines-Roosevelt High School, had qualified for the world event by winning the U.S. Junior Championship in February in New York.
