“We value the in-state competition greatly and know that the fans of each institution take seriously the pursuit of the Cup,” Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said. “It is our desire to get as many of our sports involved in this institutional competition as possible and the addition of volleyball is a step in the right direction.”
The Cyclones and Hawkeyes will be meeting in volleyball for the first time since 2003 and just the second time in a decade. ISU, which won the last meeting between the intrastate rivals, is coming off its best season in over 10 years after compiling a 16-15 record in head coach Christy Johnson's first season at the helm.
“The Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series is a great way to promote the outstanding rivalry between Iowa State and Iowa,” Johnson said. “We are honored that volleyball will be included in next year's competition and it will only add more excitement and incentive to the match.”
The match will also be part of the season-opening Hawkeye Challenge, which will also feature Chicago State and Drake.
