AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State head football coach Dan McCarney has awarded five Cyclone walkons scholarships for the 2006 season. A total of 55 ISU walkon football players have earned scholarships during McCarney's 12 years as Cyclone head coach. Defensive end Bryce Braaksma, wide receiver Nick Campbell, defensive back Justin Harris, defensive back David Rahe and linebacker Walker Scott were awarded scholarships this week. All are native Iowans.
"These young men earned their scholarships, not for one particular reason, but for day-to-day conduct and contributions to the team over several years," McCarney said. "We tell all of our walkons that when they step on the field, we don't look at anyone as a scholarship or non-scholarship player. Instead, we look at athletics, academics and how an individual carries himself on a day-to-day basis. Over 12 years we have almost a full team now of walkons who put themselves in a position to earn a scholarship. It is a truly great moment when you get to tell someone they have met the standard."
Braaksma is a junior from Sheldon who was on the Dean's List at ISU last semester. Campbell is a senior mechanical engineering major from Marion. Harris is a Davenport native who prepped at Bettendorf. He is a four-time Big 12 Conference academic honor roll member. Scott has been on the Big 12 academic honor roll the last two semesters. The Salix native prepped at Westwood (Sloan) before serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1996 to 2002. He left the Marine Corps as a sergeant in January of 2002. As a member of the Marine Corps Reserve, Scott then served in Iraq from Sept. 2004 to April 2005. He has been an Iowa State team member in 2002, 2003, 2005 and now 2006. Rahe, a senior from Dyersville (Beckman HS) was a first-team academic all-Big 12 honoree in 2005.
