AMES, Iowa -
On Wednesday's mock game:
"I thought things went well. We script every situation from personnel to substitution for every awkward, strange, wild situation so that these players have already read and reacted to it and handle it the right way. There were not a lot of major breakdowns, but lots of little things that we need to clean up and that's what the game is about. No injuries occurred at all and that was real encouraging. It was ones and twos versus threes and four, everything with Toledo. It is PATs, field goals, punts, kick-offs, kick-off returns, everything we would anticipate, but we know that Toledo will have some new and different things just like we will next Thursday night. We still prepare based off the tape we broke down of them last year. We have broken down every single game of theirs from last year. You cannot watch enough tape, that is the way we look at it. If you have watched a game 25 times, on the 26th time you will still see some things you haven't seen. It is all about trying to identify strengths and weaknesses and getting used to their personnel. They have 16 starters back, so most of those guys we are obviously going to see again next Thursday night.
Latest on the offensive right guard position:
”It really is a two-man race right now and Tom Schmeling, going into this last week is number one. We will make a final decision early next week, but Tom has the early edge right now. In the last few practices he has been the most consistent. He and Reggie are battling it out. We have Lee Tibbs who can play both guard and tackle. Paul Fisher can also play both guard and tackle. As of right now, Tom does have the edge and we will see if he can hang on between now and kickoff.”
Latest on return specialist:
”We love both of them back there, Ryan Baum and R.J. Sumrall. You can flip a coin right now, which is a good problem to have. We like them both. Every opportunity they have to catch a punt out there it looks almost exactly the same since the first day we started, which is great. They are really good ball security guys, they are good communicators and those things are important as a punt return guy. They also have a lot of courage. We can go either way. I wouldn't be surprised if you see both of them next Thursday night on punt return. Jackson and Flynn will be on kick-off returns, they are definitely our starters. We have four to six real capable backups that could be our starters."
Watching defensive lineman and newcomer Ahtyba Rubin:
”The guy has real good work ethic, the junior college coaches told us that and he really does. He will definitely play in the game and if he keeps improving and we have seven days before kickoff. He is a real accountable, tough guy that is a load in there. He is really working hard and has been playing against some very tough linemen in practice. I am really glad he made it. Once we signed him we all knew that he was going to help our team once he got here.”
