AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State senior defensive back David Rahe was one of five former Cyclone walkons awarded scholarships this week by head coach Dan McCarney. The fifth-year senior from Dyersville is a key special teams contributor. He is a construction engineering major who earned first-team academic all-Big 12 Conference honors last fall. Dyersville is where the 1987 Kevin Costner movie "Field of Dreams" was filmed. The field is still there today.
On earning a scholarship:
”It feels amazing. It was pretty neat. My first camp was when (former ISU linebacker) Erik Anderson got a scholarship (after originally walking on). I thought if I work hard enough I will be able to get one [scholarship] too. I try to always work hard and try to do my thing. It has been a great experience and it really is a blessing to be able to earn a scholarship. This is the last time around for me and I can't wait for Thursday.”
Did you ever play on the Field of Dreams:
”Oh yeah. Growing up they always had celebrity games. Baseball was always my main sport so we were bat boys for the celebrities. It was pretty neat because I got to meet Reggie Jackson, Lou Brock and Ferguson Jenkins. We were just little kids so they would hang out with us. In 1987, when they filmed the movie we had to turn out all our lights for the final scene when all the cars are coming to the field after dark. We lived just about one-third of a mile from the field.”
