AMES, Iowa - Coming off a 3-0 weekend that included wins over intrastate foes Drake and Iowa, ISU will battle Northern Iowa on Wednesday with hopes of capturing a mythical state championship.
Who: Northern Iowa at Iowa State
Where: Hilton Coliseum
When: Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Promotions: ISU students, faculty and staff can get in free with a valid ISU Card. Head coach Christy Johnson will be hosting a chalk talk session following the match.
The Series
- Northern Iowa leads 24-18
- Iowa State def. UNI last season in Cedar Falls, 3-0 (30-28, 30-24, 30-16)
- The ISU victory ended a string of 11 straight losses to the Panthers. UNI had defeated 29 straight in-state opponents prior to the loss. Iowa State has now won four straight against opponents from Iowa.
Scouting Northern Iowa
Northern Iowa was impressive in going 2-1 against a tough field at the Mortar Board Classic in West Lafayette, Ind. The Panthers defeated Albany before disposing of Clemson in five games. The wins came before and after a loss to No. 16 Purdue. Laura Rowen led the way with 3.92 kills per game and 3.17 digs. Kristin Belzung averaged 12.08 assists and 2.83 digs.
Last Week
The Cyclones went 3-0 last weekend, picking up wins over Chicago State, Drake and Iowa. It marked the fifth straight year in which ISU claimed the championship in the opening tournament.
Rally Caps Anyone?
Trailing two games to none, ISU rallied to defeat Iowa 3-2. The win not only improved the Cyclones to 3-0 on the season, but gave Iowa State an early two point lead in the 2006-07 Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series.
The Second and Third Stars Go To......
Katie Churm and Erin Boeve were also named to the all-tournament team. Churm averaged 3.73 digs and had four service aces on the weekend while Boeve hit .362 and averaged 3.18 kills. On top of that, the preseason all-Big 12 selection had two solo blocks and nine block assists.
