IRVINE, Calif. ? Iowa State got a career-high 19 kills from Lauren Cummings but was unable to overcome 23 kills from San Diego's Kristen Carlson as it fell to No. 20 San Diego, 3-2 (30-28, 28-30, 30-27, 20-30, 13-15), on Saturday in the UC Irvine Nike Invitational.
Katie Jessen added 20 kills for the Cyclones (5-2) and Katie Churm had 14 digs for the Cyclones, who had five players with double-digit digs.
Cummings and Katie Jessen had five first game kills to lead the Cyclones to a 30-28 win. The Cyclones, who had to fend off a late San Diego rally, out hit the Toreros .286 to .244.
The Toreros (4-2) bounced right back, evening the match at 1-1 with a 30-28 second game win. Jessen and San Diego's Kristen Carlson each had eight kills in the second frame as both teams hit for high percentages. San Diego's .391 hitting percentage topped Iowa State's .359.
After grabbing a 12-10 lead in the third game, ISU allowed San Diego to score the next four points. After the Cyclone timeout, Iowa State rallied to take the lead back at 19-18 but were unable to get more than one point of separation until a block assist by Jessica Klein and Kaylee Manns. San Diego came back to tie it at 25-25 but a kill by Jessen, her fourth of the game, made it a one point lead for ISU. The Cyclones extended it to three and a block assist by Nicole Lorenzen and Erin Boeve gave ISU the 30-27 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
San Diego took a 10-3 lead out of the gate in the fourth game and never allowed Iowa State to get back in the game, winning 30-20 and evening the match at two games each.
USD hit .385 in the game while holding the Cyclones to a .129 hitting percentage.
The fifth game saw ISU take a 4-2 lead on a block assist by Cummings and freshman Diane Kieger. The Toreros stormed back to gain a 7-5 advantage and force the Cyclones to use a timeout. A solo stuff by Jessen and a kill by Boeve put Iowa State on top 11-10.
San Diego regained the lead with a block to make it 13-12 and Iowa State used its second timeout. The Cyclones were unable to get back into it as San Diego clinched the match on attack error by the Cyclones.
Iowa State will host UMKC on Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum. First serve is slated for 6:30 p.m.
