AMES, Iowa--The basketball season has not officially started, but the preparation for the 2006-07 campaign is under way. The Cyclone men's basketball team has been participating in individual workouts since the beginning of the fall semester. Learning a different system under a new coaching staff is a daunting task, however the effort and sacrifice the team is making now will pay huge dividends when the first day of practice arrives on Oct. 14.
"Right now we're teaching defensive concepts," ISU assistant coach Jean Prioleau said. "We're teaching 17 guys how we are going to play and trying to install the structure of what we want to accomplish. Everybody is starting from scratch and everybody is learning and receptive to what we are trying to teach. Every player comes from different coaching philosophies and will be learning a whole new system. It takes time, but we are making progress."
The Cyclones have eight newcomers on the roster who are getting their first taste of big time college basketball. The general consensus from the group is that Oct. 14 can't get here fast enough.
"Every one on the team is starting over with a new coaching staff, so it is not just the newcomers learning a new system," ISU freshman Cory Johnson said. "We are trying to do things differently defensively and it is a day-to-day process. The workouts have gone real well and we are getting better. I can't wait for the season to get here. This is what you have to do to prepare for the season and I just can't wait to start practice."
"The workouts are going real well," Cyclone freshman Dodie Dunson said. "We are learning a lot of new things. Coming from high school to the college level is a big adjustment. I am really excited for practice to start."
The Cyclones will roughly have three weeks of official practice until their first tune-up for the season when ISU plays host to EA Sports in an exhibition game on Nov. 3 in Hilton Coliseum.
