AMES, Iowa?Brandon Rush's steal and dunk with less than a minute remaining in overtime helped No. 6 Kansas survive with a 68-64 extra session victory against Iowa State Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones, who fall to 11-6 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 action, had plenty of opportunities down the stretch to pull off the major upset.
"It was a great college basketball game, but someone has to lose," ISU head basketball coach Greg McDermott said. "Our guys battled and defensively we executed the plan really well. We played Kansas and only turned it over 10 times."
KU came out primed after halftime, going on a 12-3 run in the first 4:24 of the second half to take control at 39-33. ISU made just 1-of-5 shots to open the second period until
The game went back and forth the rest of the way. A hook shot by Hubalek gave ISU a 55-53 lead, but KU answered with a Sasha Kaun putback to tie it (55-55) with 1:45 left in regulation. On ISU's next possession, Dunson hit a trey with the shot clock winding down to push ISU out in front 58-55 with 1:10 left. ISU's lead was short, however, as KU's Rush came back with a big trey to even the score on its next possession. KU had one last chance to win it in regulation, but Mario Chalmers was off on a jumper at the buzzer.
Both teams traded baskets in the overtime period as well. The score was deadlocked at 63-63 with less than a minute remaining until Rush stole the ball from
Free-throws proved costly for the Cyclones. ISU was just 7-of-17 (41.0 percent) from the charity stripe, including missing two front ends of a one-and-one situation late in regulation.
"Our free-throw shooting was poor," McDermott added. "We need to commit ourselves to getting better than that. Anytime you lose a close game you look at the little things that hurt you. Our margin of error is really small."
ISU was also outboarded by the bigger Jayhawks, 52-36, for just the second time in its last 10 games.
"I think when you have experiences like we have, it builds trust," McDermott said. "The players trust each other. The coaches trust the players and the coaches trust each other. We are definitely getting there. I am proud of them. We stuck to our plan today and made some shots. We just came up short."
