AMES ? Cyclone Alley, Iowa State University's four-year-old student spirit group for men's and women's basketball, has closed membership registration as of Jan. 8 after exceeding 3,000 members for the first time in history. There are currently 3,021 members of Cyclone Alley, breaking the previous membership record of 2,465 set last year.
To join Cyclone Alley, an individual must be enrolled as an Iowa State student and pay a $15 annual membership fee. As a member, the student receives preferred seating at Hilton Coliseum for all home men's and women's basketball games, the official Cyclone Alley T-shirt, a spirit prop at each home game, and opportunities to participate in Cyclone Alley events such as road trips, gamewatch parties, and practice watches.
Cyclone Alley traveled to Cedar Falls, Iowa, Nov. 29 and Iowa City, Iowa, Nov. 30 for its 2006-2007 men's and women's road trips, respectively, and watched a men's basketball practice in November. Gamewatch parties are currently being planned for upcoming Big 12 men's and women's basketball games. Cyclone Alley members must purchase basketball season tickets separately from their Cyclone Alley memberships.
Due to concerns about availability of T-shirts, props, supplies, and seating, registration has officially closed for the 2006-2007 season. Students are encouraged to sign up for 2007-2008 membership beginning this spring. Online membership is available, when open, at http://www.cyclonealley.org.
"We are extremely excited about passing the 3,000-member mark,” Cyclone Alley president Charles Fisher, a senior in materials engineering from Mt. Auburn, Iowa, said. “It shows that there is growing enthusiasm within the student body for Cyclone basketball and that students believe our organization is the best way to show their ISU pride.”
“Students see a lot of benefit to joining, which is obviously why they joined in record number this year,” added vice president Monica Schwartzman, a senior in communication studies from Mahtomedi, Minn. “From getting great seats and being on television to getting the chance to meet new friends and interact with the Cyclone men's and women's basketball players, there are lots of reasons students join Cyclone Alley. We're proud to be one of the largest, fastest-growing, and classiest student basketball spirit groups in the country.”
The mission of Cyclone Alley is “to come together as a group of students to create a spirited and positive atmosphere at the men's and women's basketball games of Iowa State University and to be actively involved in the support, enhancement, and enjoyment of the games, increasing spirit and heightening Hilton Magic.”
Fisher, Schwartzman, and 10 other students make up Cyclone Alley Central, the student committee responsible for planning and organizing all Cyclone Alley events. Cyclone Alley Central is a committee of the Student Alumni Leadership Council?which is a program of the ISU Alumni Association?working in partnership with the Iowa State Athletics Department. In addition, 74 percent of Cyclone Alley members are also members of the Student Alumni Association (SAA), the student membership arm of the ISU Alumni Association.
