Chizik Adds Tight Ends Coach

AMES, Iowa -- Scott Fountain, most recently the assistant head coach at Georgia Southern, has been hired as tight ends coach at Iowa State, Cyclone head coach Gene Chizik announced Saturday. Fountain, who coached with Chizik and ISU offensive coordinator Robert McFarland at Central Florida, is the eighth position coach named to the Cyclones' new coaching staff.

“I have worked with Scott Fountain on a day-by-basis and know that we all will be able to count on him to get the best out of his players,” Chizik said. “He has experienced success in several different programs where I myself have worked so I have an extra special appreciation for the results he has produced throughout his career.”

Most recently, Fountain was assistant head coach and offensive line coach at Georgia Southern for the 2006 season. Fountain's Eagle offensive line allowed the fewest sacks in the country, surrendering just six last Fall. His pupils included all-Southern Conference lineman Lance Wayne, who started 46 career contests for the Georgia Southern.

“I jumped at this opportunity because I have great respect for Gene Chizik and Robert McFarland,” Fountain said. “In addition, I have always thought of Iowa State as a great place to coach football as a member of the Big 12 Conference.”

Fountain spent the 2004 and 2005 seasons as the offensive line coach at Middle Tennessee State. In 2005, the Blue Raiders' offense finished second in the Sun Belt Conference in passing offense and fourth in total offense and scoring offense. During his two years at MTSU he coached All-Sun Belt offensive lineman Quinton Staton (2004), Willie Hall (2005) and Gemayle Franklin (2005).

While assistant coach at UCF, Fountain coached offensive tackles and tight ends for six years, while also doubling as the programs recruiting coordinator. Under Fountain's guidance, tight end Mario Jackson was signed as a free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Steve Edwards is a member of the Chicago Bears. Tight end Michael Gaines, also coached by Fountain, was drafted in the seventh round by the Carolina Panthers in the 2004 draft.

In 1997, he coached the guards/centers at UCF and was the co-recruiting coordinator. During his tenure in Orlando, the Golden Knights offense ranked among the nation's top 30 in six of seven years and three recruiting classes ranked in the ?Top 50' according to various recruiting analysts.

Fountain went to UCF after earning his master's degree in educational leadership and spending three seasons as a graduate assistant offensive line coach at Florida State under head coach Bobby Bowden. Fountain was on staff with the Seminoles from 1994 to 1996 and was a part of three ACC Championship teams.

Prior to joining FSU, Fountain was a high school coach in Alabama for six years. A 1988 graduate of Samford with a degree in Physical Education, Fountain was a four-year letterman for the Bulldogs under head coach Terry Bowden. He started every game of his career, spending most of his time at guard on the offensive line.
