AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State volleyball fell to the 16th-ranked Kansas State Wildcats, in front of a season-high crowd of 2,157 at Hilton Coliseum Saturday night. The Cyclones dropped three straight games (24-30, 25-30, 27-30). Senior Lauren Cummings led the Cyclones with 13 kills, while junior Jen Malcom added 12.
Mistakes plagued the Cyclones (11-8, 5-4 Big 12) all night long, as ISU committed seven service errors, 10 receiving errors and four blocking errors on the night. Sophomore Kaylee Manns led ISU in assists with 36 and freshman Ashley Mass totaled 18 digs to lead the Cyclones.
KSU (14-5, 6-3) jumped out to an early lead, taking the first game, 30-24. The Wildcats never trailed in the game and the closest ISU got to the lead came on a Jen Malcom kill to close the deficit to 11-10. KSU then reeled off four straight points and never looked back.
The Cyclones and Wildcats seesawed all through the second game. With the score tied at 22 apiece, ISU committed five errors in the next seven points and KSU took command of the game, and eventually won 30-25.
ISU came out reenergized after the break in game three and spurted to a 4-1 lead. The Wildcats rebounded quickly though, and evened the game at four. Down, 18-14, the Cyclones rallied for seven of the next eight points, to pull ahead 21-20. But, the nationally-ranked Wildcat squad proved too much, and buried the Cyclones with a match winning kill by Rita Liliom, 30-27.
The loss separates the two squads in Big 12 standings.
