AMES, Iowa - Iowa State ran up a slew of offensive records but fell just short of beating the Sooners. Iowa State quarterback Bret Oberg threw four touchdown passes and ran for two others as ISU rolled up 609 yards of offense against the nation's third-rated defense, the highest yardage ever against an Oklahoma team.
Cyclone receiver Steve Lester caught 13 passes for 203 yards, both Oklahoma opponent records, for two touchdowns. Oberg completed 26-of-42 passes for an Oklahoma opponent and ISU school record 411 yards and four touchdowns.
The Cyclones, playing without all-Big Eight kicker Jeff Shudak, trailed 36-34 with 1:57 left in the game. The ensuing ISU onside kick backfired when OU's Eric Bross returned it 42 yards for a touchdown. ISU's Blaise Bryant rushed for 151 yards on 35 carries as the Cyclones outgained the Sooners 609-313 in total offense.
