- The Cyclones rolled to their ninth win in 10 matches on Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 (30-15, 30-25, 28-30, 30-17) win at Texas Tech. The Cyclones only loss during the streak came to seventh-ranked Texas on the road.
- Iowa State has won the last four meetings against Kansas. KU is the only Big 12 team in which ISU head coach Christy Johnson has yet to drop a match.
- Erin Boeve returned to her natural position, middle blocker, and is hitting .397 while averaging 4.33 blocks in two matches. The senior is also averaging 2.67 digs and 1.56 blocks since making the transition from the outside back to the middle.
- Freshman libero Ashley Mass leads the league in Big 12 matches only with an impressive 5.17 digs. As a team, ISU is averaging 19.28 digs which also ranks first. Texas A&M is second with 16.22 digs.
- Iowa State is a school-record 4-1 to start the Big 12 season. The Cyclones have not started a conference season 5-1 since 1995, when ISU opened Big Eight play with a 6-1 record.
- Mass (4.54), Laura Cady (3.06), Amy Vos (3.06) and Kaylee Manns (3.03) are all averaging over 3.00 digs per game during the last 10 matches.
- Iowa State is 7-0 when winning the important first game this season. Comparatively, the Cyclones are just 3-5 when dropping the first frame.
- Erin Boeve's 28 kills against Arizona State is still the top Big 12 performance of the season.
- The Cyclones have amped up their blocking in home matches this season, averaging 3.72 blocks per game compared to 3.10 on the road.
- ISU ranks 25th in the nation in attendance, averaging 1,047 fans per home match.
A Closer Look At Kansas (9-6, 2-3 Big 12)
- The Jayhawks lost to top-ranked Nebraska, 3-0 (18-30, 24-30, 18-30), last Wednesday, snapping a two-match winning streak.
- Against Nebraska, freshman Jenna Kaiser paced KU with eight kills while Natalie Uhart added seven. Katie Martincich recorded a double-double with 12 assists and 11 digs for the Jayhawks, who were out hit .322 to .073.
- Uhart, a junior, returned to the Jayhawk lineup after undergoing surgery on Sept. 12 to repair a congenital heart defect called a patent foramen ovale (PVO), a condition in which a hole in the septum doesn't close after birth like it typically does. Uhart, the 2006 Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, missed last year after suffering a knee injury prior to the season and is expected to bolster the Jayhawks in the middle.
- The Jayhawks rank last in the Big 12 in hitting percentage (.177) but rank fifth in opponent hitting percentage (.178). KU is one of the better serving teams in the league, ranking fifth with 1.55 aces per game. Melissa Manda is the only Jayhawk in the top-10 individually with a 3.69 digs per game average, good for ninth in the league.
- Individually, Emily Brown leads the Jayhawks with 2.07 kills, 6.73 assists, 1.95 digs and 0.80 blocks. The senior has tallied two triple-doubles in the Jayhawks' 6-2 offensive system and was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 24.
- Iowa State leads the all-time series 36-33-1 and is 20-7 at home against the Jayhawks.
Stat of the Week
Erin Boeve has reached double-figure kills in 60 of her 103 career matches, including 53 of 78 since her sophomore campaign in 2005.
Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week
- Freshman libero Ashley Mass became the first Cyclone in school history to earn Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 17) honors after averaging 5.50 digs per game in wins over Baylor and Texas A&M. The Muskego, Wis., native had 17 digs and three service aces against the Bears and ended the week with 16 digs in a ISU's first-ever sweep of the Aggies.
Can You Dig It?
- The Cyclones have shattered a pair of school-record for digs in a single match since the inception of the rally scoring era this season. With 83 against Northern Iowa, ISU broke the previous 3-game record of 76 which was set against Creighton in 2005. The Cyclones then broke the 5-game record with 102 against Missouri, topping the old record which was 95 in the regular season finale against Colorado last season.
