Ames, Iowa -- Nine Iowa State football players have been named to the 2007 Academic all-Big 12 team. Six Cyclones made the first team for having a grade-point average of at least 3.2. Three ISU players made the second team for having a GPA of at least 3.0.
Senior safety Caleb Berg, an interdisciplinary studies major who had 112 career tackles, led the Iowa Staters by making the academic all-Big 12 first team for the fourth time. Berg joins Bill Marsau (1996-97-98-99), Dave Brcka (96-97-98-99), Jordan Carstens (00-01-02-03) and Seth Zehr (03-04-05-06) as four-time, first-team academic all-conference selections.
Defensive tackle Bryce Braaksma, who finished his career with 47 tackles and five sacks, made the first team for the second time. The Sheldon native is a biology major. Making their initial appearance on the first team were tight end Derrick Catlett (So., kinesiology), fullback Steven Ebner of Sioux City (Sr., elementary education), quarterback Nate Mechaelsen of Kamrar (Sr., elementary education) and wide receiver Euseph Messiah (Jr., communications) of Bettendorf.
Senior tight end Ben Barkema of Muscatine, who finished his career with 52 catches for 566 yards and four touchdowns, made the second team as a management major. Placekicker Bret Culbertson of Des Moines, whose five field goals lifted Iowa State to a 15-13 win over Iowa in September, made the second team as a journalism major. Chris Mehring, a senior linebacker majoring in aerospace engineering, also made the second team.
