AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team ranked 20th in NCAA Division I attendance during the 2007 season, according to final rankings released Tuesday. The Cyclones averaged 1,565 fans per game to earn the first top-20 ranking in school history.
Iowa State's average attendance rose by nearly 55 percent this season and is up 151 percent from head coach Christy Johnson's first season in 2005, when the Cyclones averaged 623 spectators per match.
Iowa State's match against Nebraska on Nov. 11 drew 6,705 fans, the 16th largest crowd in the nation this season and the largest ever to watch a volleyball match in the state of Iowa.
Hawai'i was the NCAA leader this season, averaging 6,452 fans per match while Big 12 foe Nebraska ranked second with 5,140 spectators per contest. Eight of the 11 Big 12 schools that sponsor volleyball finished among the top-40 in the country in average attendance.
The Cyclones finished their season last Friday with a loss to No. 6 California in the NCAA Tournament's round of 16. Prior to falling to Cal, ISU defeated three straight ranked opponents to earn its first-ever national ranking, debuting at No. 18 in last week's poll.
