AMES, Iowa? Jiri Hubalek tallied a season-high 15 points and Iowa State forced nine second-half turnovers to pull away from intrastate rival Iowa, 56-47 Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum. The win was ISU's 400th in Hilton Coliseum and gives the Cyclones a 16-3 edge in the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series competition this season. It was the fewest points in the ISU-Iowa series for the Hawkeyes since scoring 33 points on Jan. 1, 1935.
"Obviously, it's a great win for our team, because of what we experienced earlier this week," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "Our pride really took a big hit on Wednesday, and Drake deserves all the credit for that. Our guys had a decision to make on how they were going to approach practice and this game. It's obvious that if we are going to be successful, we have to defend."
Both teams struggled to find the mark in the first half, as ISU shot 28.6 percent from the floor and the Hawkeyes made just 29 percent of their shots. The Cyclones went on an 8-2 run to take their biggest lead of the first half (26-19) with 2:42 remaining. Jiri Hubalek had a tip-in and Craig Brackins had a dunk after a missed shot to pace ISU during its run. Iowa's J.R. Angle nailed a 3-pointer in the Hawks final possession to close the gap to 26-22 at the break.
ISU opened up an eight-point lead at the start of the second half after a trey from Hubalek and a jumper from Wesley Johnson. However, Iowa kept it close with a pair of 3-pointers from Justin Johnson. ISU's lead reached nine points at 39-30 with 10:23 remaining in the game after the Cyclones made four-straight free-throws.
The Cyclone defense held strong after intermission, as Iowa made just 4-of-16 shots from the floor and committed six turnovers in the first 12 minutes of the second half. Diante Garrett was a major cause of the Hawkeyes' troubles, tallying steals on four-straight Iowa possessions midway in the second half. Iowa finished the game shooting 32.1 percent from the floor.
ISU's lead ballooned to 14 points (46-32) with just over seven minutes remaining in the game, scoring seven consecutive points at the line. ISU capped off the game with a dunk from Hubalek off a nifty feed from Bryan Petersen to give ISU a 53-40 lead with 1:50 left in regulation.
The Cyclones basically won the game at the free-throw line, shooting 17 more foul shots than Iowa. ISU took advantage of the free-throw margin by capitalizing on 20 of its 27 shots from the charity stripe. It was the most shots ISU has attempted at the line this season.
Rahshon Clark added 14 points and played stifling defense for the squad. Clark forced Iowa's top scorer Johnson to just 3-of-15 shooting from the floor.
"We really picked it up on defense today," Clark said. "We made some mistakes, but we also did some good things. It was a great win, and the team played hard. We'll take them however we can get them."
ISU has nine days off before its next game (Dec. 17), a 7 p.m. tip vs. Bethune Cookman in Hilton Coliseum.
