AMES, Iowa - Iowa State senior point guard Lyndsey Medders was named as one of 11 finalist for the eighth annual Nancy Lieberman Award. The award is a national project of the Rotary Club of Detroit, honoring the top collegiate point guard in women's Division I basketball.
The final nominee list includes Duke's Lindsey Harding, North Carolina's Ivory Latta, Maryland's Kristi Toliver and Vanderbilt's Dee Davis. The criterion for the award is the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills. Sportswriters from across the country have determined the final nominee list.
The three finalists and the winner of the honor will be announced during the NCAA Final Four, April 1-3. The winner will be honored at The Detroit Athletic Club on April 18, 2007.
Medders has set the Iowa State assist records for a career, a season and a single game. She holds the Cyclone class assist records as a freshman, sophomore and junior, and is 10 shy of setting the best season mark for an ISU senior. She led the nation in assists per game last season with a 7.7 average, and currently ranks seventh in the same category with 6.5 apg this year.
She ranks fourth on the all-time Big 12 career assist list and is ISU's ninth all-time leading scorer with 1,317 points. She was named one the nation's top five point guards by ESPN.com early in the season and has been named to numerous award watch lists this season. She was the Big 12 Player of the Week Jan. 15-21, and is a candidate for the Naismith Trophy, the John R. Wooden Award and the Senior CLASS Award.
Iowa State faces 25th-ranked Nebraska tonight at 7 p.m. in its final home contest of the regular season at Hilton Coliseum.
