AMES, Iowa ? Gene Chizik looked at Erik Link's resume and saw a young native Iowan whose work ethic and instate experience fit perfectly into the new Cyclone head coach's plans for the future of the Iowa State football program. Chizik hired Link Monday as assistant director of football operations.
"I really wanted to give a young coach from Iowa a chance to build on his career and Erik had already impressed us during the transition and recruiting period," Chizik said. "He has lived in Iowa his whole life, played in the state and built upon that experience as a graduate assistant coach. Erik is personable and was just what we were looking for to be the point man for our camps and clinics. He is truly a teacher and a coach and that combination will serve him well on our staff."
Link is a 2003 graduate of Drake where he lettered three times. The Des Moines native was an assistant coach for the Bulldogs in 2005 after serving as a graduate assistant in 2004. At Iowa State he worked the 2006 season as the offensive graduate assistant. Link's duties included coordination of the defensive scout team in practice. He coached at his prep alma mater, Des Moines North, after graduating from Drake.
"I've been impressed by Gene Chizik," Link said. "Having been here since his debut, I have watched first-hand as coach Chizik has laid the foundation for our football future at Iowa State. I'm excited about what that future holds."
