HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. ? Joe Cermak and Chris Baker paced the Iowa State golf team with some of the best scores in school history after it completed the first two rounds of the Mission Inn Collegiate Invitational Saturday. The Cyclones currently stand tied with Akron for 12th place in the 16-team field after shooting a team total of 595. Louisville is 9-under par and has a 13-stroke cushion ahead of runner-up UNC-Greensboro while Drew Younts shattered the El Campeon Course record with a 63 in the first round. Marquette's Mike Van Sickle has a narrow lead over Younts and Eastern Michigan's Bryan Haase in the race for individual honors.
Cermak worked himself in the mix for medalist honors, tying for fourth after shooting a blistering 4-under par 67 in the second round. The junior equaled ISU's second-lowest round for the second time in his career. Cermak already has two top-five finishes this season and has scored in the 60's three times. The Chicago, Ill., native already holds the school record for the lowest tournament total set last year with a 205 at the 2006 Pioneer Classic.
Baker was just stroke away from earning his 14th career top-20 finish in his spring debut at the All-American Collegiate in Houston. Baker scored Iowa State's fourth-lowest round with a 1-over par 69 to wrap up Saturday's competition and is sitting at 17th place. The junior came into the tournament as the overall leader in stroke average at an even 73.00 through 17 rounds.
Cedric Bertin hovered around his solid spring average, shooting a 75 and 77 to put him at 8-over par and tie for 51st place with four others. Bertin has been consistent in his first two tournaments of the spring, placing 23rd and 28th.
Rodney Hamblin and Cameron White had uncharacteristic struggles in the second round, carding an 81 and 82, just their third round in the 80s this year. This came after the Minnesota natives shot a 77 in the first round.
Sunday's final round will begin with a 7 a.m. shotgun start.
