TUCSON, Ariz. ? Four starters recorded spring-best scores and the Iowa State women's golf team came out strong with season-low 18-hole totals during the first two rounds of action at the Mountainview Collegiate Saturday. The Cyclones currently stand in fifth place in a field stacked with Big 12 Conference competition after shooting a 291 and 294 for a first-day score of 585. ISU's best team score prior was a 300 shot in the second round at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Invitational. Nebraska is at the top of the team standings, ending the day with a tournament-low 285 to gain a 10-stroke margin over Northwestern. Indiana's Elaine Harris and Oklahoma's Kendall Dye, competing individually, are tied for the individual lead with a two-round score of 139.
Jessica Shin opened up with an impressive start, shooting a season-best and tying her career-low total 70 in the first round followed with a 73 to close out the day. Shin stands in a tie for eighth place and was as high as third at the end of the first round. The junior's best finish this season came in the fall conclusion at the Aloha Purdue Collegiate where she finished 16th. The Mankato, Minn., native tied the school's second-lowest round for the second time in her career Saturday after she carded a 70 in her run for 10th-place at the 2006 Big 12 Championship.
Karly Pinder, coming off a team-best 16th-place finish at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, continued to hit her stride by tying for 14th and trails Shin by two strokes. Pinder shattered her spring-best score in both rounds, scoring a 73 and 72 to surpass a 75 registered in Austin. Success at the Mountainview Collegiate comes as no surprise for the junior as Pinder, along with senior Christi Athas, tied the school's lowest round with a 69 last season.
Pennapa Pulsawath, the team leader in scoring average, added another accomplishment to her already decorated freshman season with a career-best score of 73 in the first round. Pulsawath kept pace with Shin and Pinder, tying for 26th and has a two-round total of 147. The freshman's previous low spring score came in the first round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic with a 75 in the first round. She fired a 74, her previous career-low score, to conclude first-day action.
Kendra Hanson played her best golf of the season, tying her season-best mark with a 75 in the first round followed by the third-best effort in her junior campaign with a 78. Hanson shined at last year's Mountainview Collegiate, equaling ISU's third-lowest score with a 71. She stands in a tie for 66th.
Athas equaled her spring-low score with a 75 in the final round as she debuted with an uncharacteristic 80 in the first round. Athas is tied for 75th with a two-round total of 155.
Tomorrow's final 18 holes will begin at 9 a.m. The Cyclones will be off until April 9-10 when they compete at the Indiana Invitational.
