AMES, Iowa ?
The Iowa State volleyball team concluded its spring season with a tournament that included South Dakota State, Northern Iowa and Minnesota on Saturday at Forker Gym. The Cyclones split a pair of games with South Dakota State before earning a 2-0 sweep of Northern Iowa in the second match of the day. ISU then dropped a three-game match, 2-1, to the Gophers in the final match of the spring.
Despite graduating four key seniors from the school's second-ever NCAA Tournament team, Iowa State finished the spring with an 8-2-1 record. The Cyclones won 21 of 33 games played.
Included in the wins this spring were victories over Creighton, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
"I am really pleased with our spring season," said Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson. "We played a lot of great teams and really got a chance to see what kind of team we will be this fall. I was concerned about the loss of our four seniors, but our experienced players have done an exceptional job of stepping into those vacated roles and our younger players have really progressed. We should be in position to have a great 2007 season."
The Cyclones' 2007 campaign will open Sunday, Aug. 26 at 5 p.m. as they play host to Middle Tennessee at Hilton Coliseum.
