Fans Enjoy Spring Football Weekend

AMES, Iowa -- The smiles on the faces of the nearly 200 young people aged 5-14 who participated in the Iowa State Letterwinners Club Spring Football Clinic Saturday in the Bergstrom Athletic Training Facility said it all. The clinic, in its second year, was a complete success and just as rewarding for Iowa State head coach Gene Chizik, his staff and players as it was for the participants.

“I thoroughly enjoyed it,” Chizik said. “After four weeks of spring football practice, working with the younger people really energizes you. The fun they are having is truly contagious and we all reaped some of that joy.”

Young people rotated through several stations throughout the 90-minute clinic. The effort preceded an hour-long autograph session. Both events were staged prior to Iowa State's spring scrimmage, in which the ISU offense beat the defense 31-22 using a special scoring system.

More than 500 Cyclones fans attended the autograph session that featured a significant number of ISU players.

The players, coaches and their families gathered after the scrimmage for a meal together in the Jack Trice Stadium Club Section. More then 7,000 fans attended the scrimmage, which was played in sunshine with temperatures in the mid-50s. Chizik roamed the sideline during the scrimmage, his first duty as head coach in a game-like situation.

“It was a great day,” Chizik said. “The crowd was large and really supportive of our team. There can't be a better way to wrap up spring football for our players. But, we still have a lot of work to do.”

Iowa State opens the season Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. against Kent State.
