Red Raiders Knock Off Cyclones, 6-1

LUBBOCK, Texas ? Senior Danielle Uscinski wrapped up her Cyclone regular-season career with a win, but Texas Tech defeated the Iowa State tennis team, 6-1, at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock Saturday. With the loss, the Cyclones dropped to 5-12 overall and 0-11 in the Big 12, while the Red Raiders improved to 10-10 overall and 3-7 in league play.

In doubles action, ISU's No. 3 duo of Chrissy Derouin and Uscinski defeated Texas Tech's Maria Jose Andres and Kerryn Potgieter, 8-3. ISU's No. 1 duo of Kara Hickey and Eve Soriano battled hard against Texas Tech's pair of Samantha van der Drift and Janet Durham before falling 8-5.

In singles action, ISU's Uscinski won her last regular-season singles match as a Cyclone as she defeated TTU's Potgieter in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. Uscinski recorded her first and last career Big 12 singles wins against the Red Raiders.

“I was really proud of Danielle today,” head coach Michele Conlon said. “She was out the first three months of the season with an injury and has really battled back. It was a well earned and well deserved win for Danielle to close out the regular season like she did."

In the No. 2 slot, ISU's Hickey battled Texas Tech's Lakann Wagley to the final point as she fell in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. In the No. 6 slot ISU's Soriano battled back after dropping the first set and swept the second set, 6-0, before falling in the third set, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2.

The match against the Red Raiders concludes the regular season for the Cyclones as they now prepare for the Big 12 Tournament. The 2007 Big 12 Tennis Championships will be held at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo. Competition will start Thursday, April 26, and will wrap up with the Championship match on Sunday, April 29.
