AMES, Iowa-- Iowa State sophomore forward Wesley Johnson will be a member of the Athletes in Action team that will play a series of exhibition games in Australia this summer.
The all-star team will train at the AIA headquarters in Xenia, Ohio, Aug. 4-8 before flying to Sydney, Australia. The team will play eight games in Sydney and Perth vs. professional teams from Australia's National Basketball League from Aug. 9-22. "This is a great chance for Wesley to get some added experience playing against outstanding competition this summer," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "Athletes in Action is a fantastic organization and I am sure Wesley will come back in the fall with a positive experience." A native of Corsicana, Texas, Johnson averaged 12.3 points and 7.9 rebounds en route to Big 12 all-Rookie honors as a true freshman in 2006-07. Johnson ranked third in the Big 12 and 77th nationally in rebounding, grabbing the sixth-most caroms (244) for a rookie in Big 12 history. Johnson, a honorable mention freshman All-America pick by Collegehoops.net, made 32 3-pointers, the third-best freshman total in school history. Johnson will be joined on the team by Ray Schafer (Oregon), Jay R Strowbridge (Nebraska), Josh Carter (Texas A&M), Jimmy Graham (Miami, Fla.), Matt Hall (Texas-Pan American), Jason Holsinger (Evansville), Michael Niemi (SMU), Jay Watkins (San Francisco) and Luke Zeller (Notre Dame).
