AMES, Iowa-- Former Cyclone basketball star Paul Shirley is the author of a new book that will hit stores on May 15 titled, Can I Keep My Jersey?: 11 Teams, 5 Countries, and 4 Years in My Life as a Basketball Vagabond.
Shirley, a native of Meriden, Kan., who played at ISU from 1997-2001, gained cult status among sport fans for his insightful and witty blogs on ESPN.com during his time as a Phoenix Sun from 2004-05. In his book, Shirley pokes fun at himself while giving readers an up-close and inside look on life in professional basketball from a journeyman perspective. Shirley has played for 11 professional basketball teams in his seven years after earning his engineering degree from ISU in Dec. of 2000.
Shirley scored 822 points in his Cyclone career, averaging 7.5 points and 5.0 rebounds. He started all 31 games in the 2000-01 season, averaging 10.0 points and 6.9 rebounds to help ISU win the 2001 Big 12 Championship. He earned honorable mention all-Big 12 and second-team academic All-American honors as a senior in 2001.
