Johnson's AIA Team Begins Competition

SYDNEY, Australia?Iowa State sophomore forward Wesley Johnson and the rest of his Athletes In Action basketball team arrived in Australia on Aug. 9 and already have two games under their belt against teams in the top professional league in Australia. The AIA squad, which consists of college basketball stars from around the United States, lost its first game to the West Sydney Razorbacks, 128-93. Johnson had 10 points and five rebounds in the loss.

The AIA team shook off the rust and played much better in its second game, falling just short against the three-time NBL champion Sydney Kings, 105-103. Notre Dame's Luke Zeller missed a shot at the buzzer to win the game for the Americans. Johnson was outstanding in game two, scoring 21 points, including 10 in the third period.

Diary #2: Well it's simply beautiful over here. We went sight-seeing the first couple of days, including trips to the Blue Mountains and the beach. We played our first game against the West Sydney Razorbacks. It was a good experience. They play a totally different style of basketball than we are used to, but it was fun. I dunked on a guy really bad which got the crowd going. The game was more like an exhibition, but we will have a real game against the Sydney Kings, which I hear are pretty good.

Diary #3: I played real well against Sydney. I had 21 points and 10 boards against the Kings, which is one of the better teams in the area. I had three dunks, two over the top of some of their players. We lost by two points (105-103). We had the game won, but we couldn't seal the deal. I had a lot of dribble drive points. We play again Tuesday and we will get the opportunity to go to a juvenile center and speak to the kids.
