AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State volleyball team hit just .098 and dropped a 3-1 (24-30, 30-27, 18-30, 21-30) decision to Creighton on Tuesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
The Bluejays (3-1) had 15 blocks to Iowa State's 13 and used 18 kills from Lauren Bloemke to beat the Cyclones (0-2). Joining Bloemke in double figures was Jessica Houts and Allie Oelke, who finished with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. The Bluejays also got a match-high 18 digs from Bianca Rivera.
Erin Boeve paced Iowa State with 14 kills while Lauren Cummings chipped in 11. Defensively, ISU matched Creighton with 54 digs, including 15 from Laura Cady and 11 from Boeve. Mary Bisenius added eight kills in her first action of the season and Jen Malcom had two solo stuffs and seven block assists for the Cyclones in the loss.
Iowa State had some opportunities throughout the match to get back into it but the Cyclones were unable to string together any substantial runs, partly due to mistakes on their end according to ISU head coach Christy Johnson.
“I was pretty disappointed that we weren't able to do some of the things that didn't involve our offense necessarily,” said Johnson. “We just need to do a better job passing the ball, serving and blocking.”
In the first game, a kill by Victoria Henson tied it up at 16-16 but Creighton scored the next five points to break open the game and cruise to a 30-24 win. The Cyclone effort was hampered by seven service errors in the game.
Iowa State bounced back in the second frame and tied the match up with a 30-27 win. The Cyclones hit .217 while holding Creighton to a .174 hitting percentage. ISU trailed by three early at 11-8 before a Mary Bisenius kill set the Cyclones on a 3-0 run to tie it up. The teams battled back and forth with the Cyclones taking the lead for good at 25-24 on another smash from Bisenius.
Creighton used a 11-0 run midway through the third game to pick up a 30-18 win and go ahead 2-1. With the score 14-13 in favor of the Cyclones, Creighton scored the next 11 points, which included four of their 15 blocks, to go on top 24-14 en route to the win.
The Cyclones again struggled to get going offensively, hitting just .028, in the fourth game and fell to the Bluejays 30-21 to finish the match.
Iowa State will be back in action this weekend as they head to Tempe, Ariz., for the Arizona State Tournament. The Cyclones will open with Northern Arizona on Friday at noon before facing New Mexico at 4 p.m.
