AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team travels to Tempe, Ariz., to take part in the Hilton Phoenix/East Mesa Challenge, hosted by Arizona State, this weekend at Wells Fargo Arena. The Cyclones (0-2) will open tournament play against Northern Arizona on Friday at noon (CST).

Cyclone Notebook
- The Cyclones fell to Creighton on Tuesday evening, dropping to 0-2 for the first time since 1998. ISU last started 0-3 in 1996.
- ISU will face Northern Arizona (2-1) and New Mexico (4-0) on Friday before facing Arizona State (0-3) on Saturday and Long Island (2-2) on Sunday.
- Iowa State setter Kaylee Manns and outside hitter/right side hitter Meghan Ferrie will return to the court in Friday's second match against New Mexico after missing the first three matches of the season due to suspension.
- The Cyclones have struggled offensively to start the season, hitting under .100 in both contests.
- The Cyclones had a school record 38 block assists against Middle Tennessee, breaking the previous record of 37 set last year in the regular season finale against Colorado.
- Middle blocker Jen Malcom is averaging 2.38 blocks after two matches. The junior had two solo stuffs and seven block assists against Creighton.
- A strong point last season, this year's ISU squad has had difficulty in the serve and serve receive game. The Cyclones have 20 service errors and 17 receiving errors.
- Laura Cady has had 10+ digs in the last six matches dating back to last season. Cady had a team-high 15 on Tuesday against Creighton.
- Erin Boeve recorded the first kills-digs double-double of her career against the Bluejays, recording 14 kills and 11 digs in the match.
- One area that hasn't suffered for the Cyclones this season is blocking. Iowa State is averaging 4.12 blocks, which ranks first in the Big 12.
A Closer Look At Northern Arizona (2-1)
- This is the first meeting between the Cyclones and Lumberjacks.
- NAU is coached by Chris Campbell, who has a 21-57 record and is in his fourth season at the school.
- The Lumberjacks went 2-1 in their tournament last week, defeating UC Davis and Albany before falling to New Mexico State.
- Northern Arizona is led by Kim Babcock, who averages 4.50 kills and 2.92 digs. Junior middle blocker Emily Osiadacz leads the Big Sky Conference with a .475 hitting percentage
A Closer Look At New Mexico (4-0)
- Iowa State leads the all-time series 2-1, with the last meeting being a 3-1 win on Sept. 12, 1997 in Ames.
- New Mexico is 4-0 for the first time since 1994 after beating Long Island 3-0 on Tuesday night.
- The Lobos are coached by Jeff Nelson, who is in his first year as head coach at New Mexico after spending the last four years at San Fransisco. Nelson was the head coach at Texas Tech from 1995-2002.
- Outside hitter Jeanne Fairchild paces the Lobos with 4.38 kills while Gayle Tripp averages 5.14 digs.
A Closer Look At Arizona State (0-3)
- Iowa State and Arizona State are meeting for the first time.
- The Sun Devils dropped three matches last weekend, including being swept by Big 12 foe Texas Tech.
- ASU is coached by Brad Saindon, who has compiled a 27-58 record and is in his fourth season at the school. Saindon coached at Colorado from 1986-96.
- The Sun Devils struggled offensively last weekend, hitting just .157. They are led by Margie Giordano (3.91 kills) and Sydney Donahue (7.36 digs).
A Closer Look At Long Island (2-2)
- Iowa State and Long Island are meeting for the first time.
- Long Island is 2-2 on the young season, with wins over Fairfield and San Diego State and losses to UC Santa Barbara and New Mexico.
- The Blackbirds are coached by Toby Rens, who is 85-34 in his fourth season at the school.
- LIU's offense is led by Martina Wagner (4.87 kills) while Svetlana Simic (3.73 digs) leads the defense.
