AMES, Iowa- Freshman Dominique Buckley is one of seven newcomers on the Iowa State men's basketball roster for 2008-09. A first-team Detroit Free Press all-state pick as a senior at Romulus High School in Detroit last season, Buckley will likely be a contributor in the Cyclone backcourt in his rookie campaign. With official practice set to begin less than three weeks away (Oct. 17), cyclones.com got a chance to sit down with Buckley to see how his first month of school has gone.
How has the individual and team workouts been going?
“It has been going real good. It is tougher than I thought it would be. Everybody is getting along and buying into the program and learning a new system.”
How have the veterans on the team helped you get acclimated?
“They (the veterans) have helped out a lot. Just last year, Craig (Brackins) and D.G. (Diante Garrett) were in the same position that I am in now. They are really pushing us and motivating us like a big brother. They have been great role models for what we need to do and how we need to do things. If we (the newcomers) aren't doing something right, they will get on us. They have been great leaders so far.”
What type of attributes will you bring to this team?
“I look at myself as a point guard who can take care of the ball and not make mistakes. As far as winning, I will do anything Coach McDermott tells me to do. If he needs me to be a leader or a role player, then I will do it.”
How is dorm life?
“It is going good. I am rooming with L.A. (Pomlee) and Scott (Christopherson). I love those guys to death. Me and L.A. have gotten real close since day one. Scott moved in when school started and he has been great. Wes (Eikmeier), Clinton (Mann) and Big Ham (Justin Hamilton) are right down the hall and we all leave our doors open and hang out together. It is really a brother-like atmosphere.”
Are you missing home (Detroit)?
“I think about Detroit all the time. Every night before I go to sleep I think about what is going on at home. I pretty much talk to my family every day. I miss it a lot, but I am here in Ames and I am having fun.”
How excited are you to officially start practice?
“Man, I can't even explain it. I have been waiting for this to happen since my high school season ended. It is going to be a great experience and hopefully I get to play a lot of minutes and help us win a lot of games.”
