Henson's big night was coupled with a career-high 20 kills from freshman Rachel Hockaday, while Jen Malcom chipped in 13 kills. The Cyclones (12-8, 4-5 Big 12) also got 32 digs from Ashley Mass, tying a career high, while Amy Vos posted a season-high 10 in the losing effort. Freshman Caitlin Mahoney tied a career-high with her 12 digs as the Cyclones outdug the Buffaloes 78-71. ISU also won the hitting percentage battle, .247 to .238, but the Buffs dominated at the net with a 17.5-10 blocking edge.
“Victoria (Henson) did a great job today,” Johnson said. “She continues to do a good job for us offensively and that is encouraging. Malcom played really hard despite being a bit hobbled and I thought she was very efficient for us.”
Kaylee Manns had 72 assists and eight digs to go along with three kills for the Cyclones.
Alex Buth and Amber Sutherland led the way for Colorado (10-8, 4-5) with 17 kills each while Callie Webster dug 25 balls.
The Cyclones used a 9-0 run to close out the first set and take the 25-22 win. Trailing 22-16, ISU got three straight kills to force a Colorado timeout at 22-19. Following the break, Kieger and Petersen teamed up for three straight blocks to tie it at 22-22. ISU then scored the final three points for the win.
The Cyclones then gave one back in the second set as Colorado stormed back to take the 26-24 win and tie it at 1-1 heading into the break. The Cyclones led 24-22 following back-to-back kills from Henson but Colorado scored the final four points to close out the set. Henson had seven kills for the Cyclones, who saw their hitting percentage dip from .238 in the first set to .154 in the second.
Set three was all Hockaday as the freshman blasted 10 kills in the frame to take the 25-21 win. With Hockaday hitting the floor from all over, ISU hit .442 as a team and used a key 3-0 run to push its lead to 23-19 following a block by Petersen and Malcom. The Cyclones held on for the win as Hockaday blasted a kill to give ISU the 2-1 edge.
The Cyclones held match points three times in the fourth set but Colorado was able to fend off the threat and force a fifth set with a 28-26 win.
The Buffaloes took a 5-3 lead in the fifth set but Iowa State tied it up at 6-6 and took a 7-6 lead on Debbie Stadick's kill. CU scored the next two points to go up 8-7 as the teams switched sides. Colorado pushed its lead to 10-8 and then 11-9 but the Cyclones tied it 11-11. Following a point for the Buffs, Malcom put away a kill to tie it at 12-12. That was all the scoring the Cyclones would do as Colorado took the next three points and the five-set win.
Iowa State returns home for a three-match home stand, which begins Wednesday against No. 15 Kansas State. First serve will be at 6:30 p.m.
