AMES, Iowa--Iowa State head men's basketball coach Greg McDermott announced today that Marquis Gilstrap, a junior college wing from Gulf Coast Community College (Panama, Fla.), has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Iowa State beginning in the 2009-10 season. Gilstrap, who is in his first season at GCCC, will have one season of eligibility for the Cyclones next year.
Gilstrap, a 6-7, 210 forward from Covington, Ga., began his collegiate career in 2005-06 playing for Palm Beach C.C., but a broken leg in the middle part of the season temporarily derailed his career. However, Gilstrap picked up interest from Division I schools with his play this summer at the Ken Littlefield Junior College Showcase. Gilstrap has been Gulf Coast's top performer so far this season, averaging 22.7 points and 9.0 rebounds through four games while competing in arguably the best junior college conference in the country (Panhandle Conference). GCCC is off to a 3-1 start, including a victory over No. 21 Aiken Technical.
“Marquis' versatility and ability to score the basketball will prove to be a tremendous asset to our program,” McDermott said. “At 6-7, Marquis possesses the perimeter skills that will cause match-up problems for our opponents. We look forward to seeing the impact his character, work ethic, and leadership will have on our program on a daily basis.”
Gilstrap, who prepped at East Side High School in Covington, Ga., is from the same hometown as former Cyclone star Kantrail Horton (2000-01). Horton is a friend and mentor to Gilstrap.
“I have been very impressed with his skill level,” Horton said. “I know he is ready for the Big 12.”
