AMES, Iowa ? On a night when not everything was clicking for Iowa State, team captains Kaylee Manns and Jen Malcom were doing just that. Manns narrowly missed a triple double, finishing with 60 assists, 13 digs and eight total blocks while Malcom had 17 kills and eight blocks of her own as the Cyclones defeated Colorado, 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 32-30, 25-15), Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones (17-11, 9-8 Big 12) hit .242 and had 70 kills to just 59 for Colorado (12-14, 6-11). Led by its captains, Manns and Malcom, Iowa State held a 12-8 edge in blocks.

ISU head coach Christy Johnson praised the play of Manns, who recorded her 46th career double-double in the match.
“I've been talking with Kaylee lately,” Johnson said. “We're trying to find some people that will play with a little more energy and a little more fire. I was really proud that she stayed fiery but composed, the opposites of each other. She really just kept it together and didn't panic. I think she played really well and she did what she needed to do.”
The trio of Victoria Henson, Rachel Hockaday and Diane Kieger also posted double-digit kills with 17, 13 and 10, respectively. Freshman Carly Jenson got her first career start and responded with a career-best nine kills from the right side.
Defensively it was Ashley Mass teaming with the outstanding blocking performances of Malcom and Manns. Mass, a sophomore, posted a match-high 28 digs and went over 500 digs in a season for the second time in her career. The Muskego, Wis. native is just the second ISU player to record 500 digs in back-to-back seasons.
Hockaday also had an outstanding match defensively, digging a career-best 16 balls.
ISU started off sluggish, hitting just .070 to drop the first set 25-21. The Buffaloes hit only .087 but were aided by five service errors by the Cyclones.
The Cyclones rebounded for a 25-19 win in the second frame using five kills from Jenson, who just broke into the rotation last week at Texas A&M. In that match, Jenson had a career-best seven kills.
“Some nights, not everyone has it and we are searching. I thought Carly did a nice job coming in, and I think probably this was the first start of her career. So I was really happy to see her play well. I think we have some depth this year, so we want to make sure that when someone is off we are using that depth.”
In the all important third set, ISU held a 24-21 edge following a service error by CU. The Buffaloes fought off three set points and took a 25-24 lead on one of Emily Sisco's 18 kills on the night. The teams battled back-and-forth to a 30-30 tie before Henson broke the deadlock with a kill. Then it was Manns' time as she stuffed back Amber Sutherland's attack to give the Cyclones the 32-30 win.
Johnson said the momentum gained with the win played a huge role in the outcome of the fourth set.
“A loss in that situation would be pretty disheartening and hard to bounce back from. It is tough to come back from those types of games. I'm thankful we toughed it out. We fought off a set point or two but we didn't back down when the pressure was on.”
After grabbing the momentum with the third-set win, ISU jumped out to a 7-1 lead behind four kills from Hockaday. The Cyclones never looked back and went on to the 25-15 win, snapping their two match losing streak in the process.
Iowa State will be back in action Saturday as it travels to Oklahoma for a 3 p.m. match.
