When Christy Johnson took the head coaching position for the Iowa State volleyball team late in 2004, there
was host of young talent already in place. Although the team already had great offensive threats,
Johnson knew it was going to take players with solid defensive mindsets and a focus on passing to take
this team to the top of the Big 12.
The Cyclones added a key piece to their defense in 2005 when Amy Vos committed to Iowa State. One
of the first members of Christy Johnson's inaugural recruiting class, Vos brought the defensive
mentality that Johnson was looking to build off of. Along with her defensive attributes, Vos has become
one of the top passers on the team.
“I really feel like her passing has come a long way,” head coach Christy Johnson said. “She's also
making defensive plays that quite frankly I didn't know she could make.”
While the Burlington, Wis. native's workload on the team has increased every season; Vos has also
developed into great leader on and off the court. In Vos's freshman season, seniors like Amanda Craig
took the roll of intense and aggressive senior leaders. Now in her fourth year at Iowa State, Vos finds it
hard to believe that she is now one of those seniors.
“It's weird because they haven't experience what I experienced (as a freshman),” Vos said. “I remember
that those seniors went all out when I was a freshman. I think I just have to show the freshmen how
you step up and things like that.”
Although not the most outspoken player on the team, Vos has proven to be a solid asset to the
Cyclones defense. The five-foot seven-inch defensive specialist is third among active Cyclones with 453
career digs.
“She has gotten better and better every year,” Johnson said. “I think her senior year is the best I have
ever seen her play.”
A member of the National Honor Society, Vos plans to continue with dietetics and hopes to find an
internship after she graduates. However very involved in her field of study, Vos hopes to continue to be
involved with volleyball.
“I'm probably going to back to Wisconsin and coach for my old club,” Vos said. “I'll hopefully do an
internship and become a registered dietician and look for a job.”
