TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ? Iowa State's climb up the national ladder in men's cross country under head coach Corey Ihmels continued Monday as the Cyclones finished 17th among the 31 teams at the NCAA Championships on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. The effort marked a national jump of 13 places over last season for ISU and was the best national NCAA showing by a Cyclone cross country team since the 1997 squad finished 15th.
Guor Marial's All-American effort of 38th place in the 252-runner field led Iowa State. Marial, a junior, finished the 10,000-meter course in 30:12.3. Oregon senior Galen Rupp led the Ducks to the NCAA team title, taking first-place overall in 29:04. ISU senior Kiel Uhl missed All-America honors by one spot. The former Des Moines Roosevelt prep was 50th in 30:27.5 as Iowa State's second finisher. Cyclone sophomore Hillary Bor was 56th in 30:31.7. Oregon finished with 93 points. ISU had 435 points.

“Our program is improving and I think people across the country are taking notice of the progress we are making,” Ihmels said. “This is not to say that we are satisfied with everything that happened today. We could have used a little more depth and been a top 10 team today. You can always do better. The bottom line is we are going in the right direction. Kiel Uhl has made major contributions to elevating our program and we will miss him next fall. The good news is he will still be here for track and field.”
Senior Kevin Born was Iowa State's fourth finisher, placing 173rd (31:27.4) and was followed by teammates sophomore Clayton Carper (216th/32:02.8) a former Mason City prep, freshman Yonas Mebrahtu (242nd/32:49.4) and freshman Rico Loy (245th/332:58.3).
